Co-Managed IT — Why It Works Better Than Full Outsource

I have this conversation a lot. A business has an internal IT person — sometimes a small team — and they're trying to figure out if they should outsource everything to an MSP or keep doing it themselves. The answer is usually neither. Co-managed IT is the bit in the middle that most people don't know exists.
What co-managed IT actually is
You keep your internal IT person. They know your business, your people, your quirks. That's valuable and you don't want to lose it.
What we do is fill the gaps. The stuff your IT person doesn't have time for, doesn't specialise in, or needs a second pair of eyes on. Security configuration, M365 administration, project work, after-hours support, escalation for tricky problems.
Your IT person stays in control. We're not taking over — we're backing them up.
Why full outsource often doesn't work
When a business outsources everything to an MSP, a few things tend to happen:
You lose context. An external team doesn't know that Janet in accounts needs her spreadsheet formatted a specific way, or that the warehouse printer has always been temperamental. Your internal person knows this. An MSP learns it slowly, painfully, through tickets.
Response times frustrate people. External MSPs triage by severity. That's fair, but it means the "small" things that matter to your staff sit in a queue. Your internal person would have fixed it in two minutes.
You lose ownership. When everything is outsourced, nobody inside your business really understands your IT anymore. If you ever want to bring it back in-house or switch providers, you're starting from scratch.
Why going it alone doesn't work either
On the flip side, one IT person can't do everything. They can't be across security best practice, M365 updates, project delivery, and day-to-day support all at once. They burn out, things get missed, and the business carries risk it doesn't know about.
How co-managed works in practice
It depends on what you need. Some examples from businesses we work with:
Internal IT handles day-to-day support. We handle M365 administration and security. Internal IT runs projects. We provide architecture advice and a second opinion. Internal IT covers business hours. We cover after-hours and weekends. Internal IT manages on-prem. We manage cloud.
It's not one-size-fits-all — that's the whole point. We work out what your internal person needs help with and build the arrangement around that.
What it costs
Less than full outsource, because you're not paying us to do everything. You're paying for the specific capabilities your team needs. For most businesses we work with, it's a fraction of what a full MSP engagement would cost, and you get a better outcome because your internal person is still there doing what they do best.
If your IT person is stretched and you're wondering what the options are, let's have a chat. No pitch — just a straight conversation about what would actually help.
